The Founders

Jian Wang

Co-founder and Chairman of BGI Group

 Jian Wang is the chairman of BGI Group. In 1991, he led the establishment of the Seattle Chinese Biomedical Association, planning to bring the Human Genome Project back to China. In 1994, he returned to China to establish BGI Biotechnology (Beijing) Co., Ltd., and actively promoted the implementation of the Human Genome Project. In 1999, he led the establishment of BGI in order to undertake the Chinese part of the Human Genome Project. From 2003 to 2007, he served as deputy director of the Institute of Genomics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2007, BGI relocated its headquarters to Shenzhen. Wang Jian graduated from Hunan Hospital (now Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University) in 1979. He received a master’s degree in integrated Chinese and Western medicine from Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (now Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine) in 1986. From 1988 to 1994, he completed postdoctoral research at Texas University, the University of Iowa and the University of Washington. 

Huanming Yang 

Co-founder and Chairman of BGI Group

 Huanming Yang is the Chairman of the BGI Group. Yang graduated from Hangzhou University in 1978 and the Nanjing Railroad Medical Institute in 1982. He performed his PhD research in genetics at the Institute of Medical Genetics of the University of Copenhagen, in Denmark and then spent 6 years mapping genes on the X chromosome during postdoctoral research at the CNRS Immunology Center in Marseilles, France, at Harvard Medical School, and at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is now a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the German National Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Science Academy, the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and the US National Academy of Sciences, among others. From 2003 to 2007, Huanming served as the head of both BGI and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Henry has always been dedicated to guiding the younger generation through education and teaching. He is a Long-Term Visiting Professor at the Southern University of Science and Technology, and frequently brings students with him to scientific meetings. Henry has been a regular presence at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Biology of Genomes meeting since he first came nearly 20 years ago. 

Siqi Liu

Co-founder and Supervisor of BGI Group

 Siqi Liu, currently the chairman and supervisor of BGI Group, is in charge of the board of supervisors and spectrometry. In 1999, he founded BGI as a co-founder and served as a researcher at the Beijing Genomics Research Center and a supervisor of the BGI Group. He has served as a researcher at the Beijing Genomics Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a professor at the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and an adjunct professor at the China Agricultural University. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Louisville. He graduated from the University of Texas School of Medicine, with a Ph.D. in Human Genetics and Biochemistry.
